Chapter 10

Or it might be if she could start the car.

"Grrr, why me? Why does everything seem to happen to me? What did I do to deserve it?"

Elf tried to start the car over and over again. She knew there was gas in the tank. The lights were working so the battery was fine, but every time she turned the key she only heard a clicking noise.

Grabbing the steering wheel in frustration, she dropped her head against it in despair. Unfortunately, this set off the horn.

Desperately tapping, prodding and thumping, she tried to stop it, but to no avail.

Damn. Damn. Damn. Her anger was boiling. "Now what?"

Resigned to further embarrassment, she knew she had to go back inside the vets’ to ask Rudi for help. With the horn still piercing the town’s silence, Elf scooped her bag from the seat and slid out from the door.

And there stood Rudi in the doorway, cuddling Sue, watching her with a grin on his face.

Elf stared up and down the street in desperation. Surely this town had a few other occupants apart from the overly jolly shop owners and this smug combination cop and veterinarian.

Rudi was saying something, but she couldn't quite make it out, due to the racket from the horn.

Walking reluctantly towards him, she could hear the words, "Trying to get attention?"

"No, I'm not trying to get attention," she shouted. "The horn's stuck because I banged my head against the steering wheel…because the car didn't start."

"Does that help? To start a car? Banging your head?" Rudi asked with a wide smile across his face.

"Obviously not, but it helped me with my frustration. Instead of standing there grinning, do you think you can help me stop the noise? You’re an officer of the law; you’re supposed to be helping people in need."

"Or trouble-makers who disturb the peace," he sniggered, dumping Sue into her arms. Walking over to the car while taking something out from his pocket, he bent over the steering wheel and poked a small flat-ended tool into the gap between the horn and the steering wheel. When he raised the plate, the noise stopped at once.

"Hmm, I could’ve done that with my nail file," she mumbled to herself. Cursing silently, Elf suddenly had an urge to say Bah Humbug, but graciously muttered, "Thanks."

"There. Now you can go," Rudi said, reaching for Sue.

"No I can't."

"Why? You were in such a hurry a minute ago."

"My car won't start, remember?" Elf mumbled.

"Sorry, didn't quite catch that." Rudi was enjoying Elf's embarrassment.

"I said, my car won't start. Is there a mechanic or someone working in a garage I can call?"

"Hmm, it's probably just out of gas or has a dead battery."

"Even I know the basics and it's not either one of them. The engine isn’t turning over. Don’t you know anything about cars?" she replied icily.

"The garage is closed. The mechanic is away until after Christmas, but I can use their tow truck if you need help getting back to the cabin. The mechanic will come out there to help you when he gets back.
